I was sipping my kopi kampung whilst enjoying the prosperous view of my village when I accidentally spill my coffee and uttered out "Oh my God!". Thats not the so shocking part, it was my 3 year old niece saying that shocked me to death. She said "Uncle, mana boleh cakap Oh My God, Harem!" or lossely translated as "Uncle, you cannot say Oh my God.Its Harem!" I was truly flabbergasted when my Auntie reaffirmed her grandchild saying. I was thinking rationally how to counter back her stand but I was totally speechless. She was saying about how the saying is harem and you can only use Malay language in prayers. "Oh my God" if translated into Malay language will be "oh Tuhanku" . Doesn't it bring the same meaning?It makes me wonder if "Oh my god" is Harem, how does the non-Malays Muslim pray? And how a believer have to pray without having the right to pronounce God As God? Yes, indeed it is way better to use God's name in prayers but we know what we believe in even with the usage of the word God. Nowadays, God's name has been subjected to a superficial use, people just hang and say His name without having the really understanding of Him. Which is the real thing to be concern with! Why make things complicated when Islam is Addin, the way of life. If there are any Sura' or Hadith preventing Muslim for using the word God in prayers, please do inform me because I'm concern.
What sort of that?! Saying "oh my God " is not illegal. There is no any hadith or in Quran stated it is illegal to say that. God is God. If we search thoroughly in any source, God refers to ALLAH and ALLAH refers to God. No mistake on it. Who says that is 'haram'? Such statement is without proper religious knowledge. God is ALLAH. 'Tuhan' is ALLAH. Then what? Same right? If you say "Oh, Jesus Christ", then it is illegal because you imitating Christian's exclamation. There is no wrong to pronounce "My God" in Islam. Your auntie said that because she confused 'God' as the Christianity God. However, don't you know that Judaism & Christianity worship ALLAH as well? Except that Christianity includes Trinity doctrine which is 'syirik' in Islam. Try to explain that to your auntie. My advice, if you yell next time, practice to say "Masya-ALLAH", Astaghfirullah" or "LailahaillALLAH". This way is better for us as Muslims. Thanks because discussing this issue because many people out there simply don't know and misconcept.
