Backpacking to IndoChina

Yes, you hear me right. I'm leaving on a no-planning, random and no-time-frame backpacking to IndoChina. Will be starting my journey from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to the southern part of Thailand, which is Hat Yai before making my way to Bangkok (again!)

The planning is to actually at least cross 3 countries in just merely a month. No rush and whatnot. I have a dream to land my feet in China but I guess I will let the journey take its course. So, Bangkok, Siem Reap, Phnom Penh, HCMC, Da Nang, Hue and Hanoi HERE I COME! :D

Till then peeps, keep on traveling! ;D

People I met while backpacking Ep1.

Usually when you travel, what do you look forward most? The food, the attractions, or the country? I personally love meeting people, as much as I love eating.  For me the people I met while I travel co-author my backpacking tales. They are the colours to my painting. Some are really good people, some are just friends and some who call themselves family-to-me.  I have to admit that I met some bad ones too... part and parcel of life eh?

So far, I've only backpack to five Asian countries; Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand and Brunei (solo traveling  or with my sisters). Maybe my experience is not as much as people who have traveled their whole life, but it is enough for me to at least understand people a lot better then before.

The Travel Penguins.

How did I meet these people and finally calling ourselves The Travel Penguins? By chance and love for traveling I must say! I seriously admire them from their blogs, we kept tweeting each other. Sharing traveling tales and whatnot till one day it was fated that we were meant to meet and travel together! All thanks to the Kuantan, Pahang trip and the crazy night at Teluk Chempedak Beach, I am happy to call them, my traveling family. :')

This is to the crazy bunch of Travel Penguins Jard, Fie and Lily!

Krabi: revisited on the road to Ayutthaya.

What Tsunami has to do with a banana-pineapple smoothie? It looks like a far off connection eh? Well, I've been to Krabi, Thailand twice this year and I will never miss getting my dose of banana-pineapple smoothie from this one particular roadside stall by the Krabi River.

I still remember the old lady who manned the stall, the same lady who told me how she was there during the Tsunami and how bad it was as well how she coped with losing her family. I sat there the whole night listening to her despite her poor command of English.   Well, the drink she made was great. The 1st time I was there, in one night, I drank 6 glasses. It was that good!

Fast forward 6 months after that, I was on my way to Ayutthaya and decided on a detour to Krabi. Little that I expected that the same lady, the same stall will still stand there. And the best part  is that she remembered me, and in tears she excitedly said in her thick Thai accent "You comeback! You comeback ! Banana smoothie?" .

I couldn't resist giving her a tight hug, knowing that she still alive and healthy just made me happy.

More stories on people I've met while I backpack in another episodes. Till then, keep on traveling peeps! :D

How the Borneo backpacking stories begin.

If you know me or have been following me, you must have known how I have always wanted to complete my 14 States in Malaysia. Sabah was the only state left on my map. So, when the magazine I contributed to, Gaya Travel ,offered me a chance to fly to Sabah, I jumped in without any hesitation!

Okay, I know, the first part of my travel in Sabah was very much leisure and ain't backpacking. But honestly, who would have said NO eh? ;)

The first 4 days was spent with them, enjoying all the activities planned for KCC1M Sabah. What more, I was given my own room at the very VERY prestigious Magelan Sutera Harbour Hotel! My room overlooked the harbour where all these expensive yachts and boats parked. Not to forget how I witnessed the most amazing sunsets ever!

Never in my life that I thought one fine day I would be doing all these activities . From Mari- Mari Culture Village in Inanam, Proboscis Monkey sight-seeing at Beaufort to White water rafting in Kiulu and so many things! I can cut these off my bucket list! ;)

Learning how to 'sumpit" the native way!
I think I practically covered most of the places where not many travelers know about yet. Places you guys should go! There are more things to do in Sabah than just Mt. Kinabalu you know...

Having said that, I secretly went to my Creative editor, Shamsul, whom I shared some good time doing "weed" (Kidding!) if I could extend my stay in Sabah. With his approval and my luck, my flight was extended to another week, making my stay in Borneo in total of 11 days!

Sharing some good time together. No, it's not weed, I was just pulling your legs! ;p
With that time I had, my backpacking agendas kicked in. I managed to do Mount Kinabalu Park, Kundasang, Desa Milk Farm and guess what? I fulfilled another one of my dream from my super long bucket list; Overland backpacking to Brunei.

Living life, believing you can do it is within you.
Yes, I made it back and forth safely via road and a little bit of waterway. And not to forget that I came back with almost 20 immigration Stamps on my passport. Priceless!

How my passport looks like after arriving at Kuala Lurah border of Brunei.
I learned so many things on this journey and yes, good Samaritans still exist. When I thought the world is no longer a safe place to live in, came these wonderful people who shared the journey with me. To M, I know you are reading this, thank you for making me believe in humanity again.

Certainly, more details coming up in other posts. Till then, you know the drill peeps...keep on traveling! :D

Indonesia: Fly with KLM to Jakarta.

So, here is the beginning of my adventure in Indonesia. Where I traveled the Land of Java for 8 days from Jakarta to Jogjakarta and then to Bandung before flying home. Well,  this time around, I didn't go backpacking alone, I have my "sister" tagging along. Wait till you hear the story how we got separated in Jogjakarta for few hours with no means of communication, I almost wanted to call the embassy!

When we wanted to book our tickets to Indonesia, we were considering taking AirAsia but after researching, we discovered that it was cheaper to fly with KLM for the dates we selected. And this being the first time for me to actually travel on KLM, I jumped on the opportunity! I only paid RM 445 ( USD 145) for return tickets on a international full-service flight!

The flight was a transit flight for the Amsterdam-Jakarta route, serving 1 flight a day for Kuala Lumpur-Jakarta route. The departure time was 4.20pm and we arrived slightly earlier then 5.20pm (Indonesian time). It was something exciting for me as it was my very first full-service (not low cost airline) flight.

Here comes the Big Blue Bird! I was super excited while waiting for boarding!

Boarding was fast and easy. We actually book for seats behind the galley for the extra legroom but when we checked in we were given different seats.  No harm done, we were happy with those seats as we were seated at double seats.

Legroom was fine for a plus-size guy like me. And we were seated at the wing area, which has one of the nicest view from the airplane! Plus, I enjoyed the IFE on this flight as they had some American dramas that I've been wanting to watch! Seat configuration on this flight was 3-4-3 and mind you, I have never flown on a big airplane before! So,this is relatively new experience for me.

Food were served 30 minutes after take-off. And no worries, food on KLM flight to and for Jakarta is Halal, eat your heart out! I was served some Vermicelli Thai Salad for appetizer, Nyonya Curry Chicken with Rice and some Cream Pudding for dessert. All food served was by Christang and KLM partnership.

The food were delicious and having to eat it at 29,000ft was just amazing! Cheers to the journey and adventure with my Orange Juice! Two thumbs up KLM!

We landed safely though I was surprised that it was raining heavily and 6pm in Jakarta looks like 8pm in Malaysia. Immigration was breeze in Bandara Soekarno Hatta Airport and within minutes we were already running for our bags and Damri bus for our next adventure!

More stories on Backpacking in Indonesia soon! Till then...keep on traveling peeps!

Ramadhan Backpacking.

Hello, been a while since I last went for a backpacking trip overseas.  So, this Ramadhan with the spirit of musafir (traveler) I am planning for another trip. This time around, am not going solo tho, I have 2 passionate travel bloggers who (forced)^^ me to take them along.  Welcome onboard Jard and Thristhan! ;)

We are planning on doing overland Thailand all the way up to Northern Thailand. The route is as follows:

Kuala Lumpur- Hatyai- Surat Thani-Bangkok-Chiang Mai

As usual, me being the cheapskate backpacker, am aiming on spending not more than RM 400 (USD 126) for about 7 days of traveling. I might just keep traveling for here on, like work here and there, and move? Any donation is welcome! ^^

Besides that, I really forward to this trip because of Ramadhan. Imagine traveling, walking, taking train/bus for hours without eating and drinking! Breaking fast (buka puasa) in  a foreign land! Money can't buy experience! :)

This time around, I am opening this trip for sponsorship. I would love to carry your name and brands. This includes physical advertising, social media blast and blogging! Do contact me at r.haries.er@gmail.com. Cheers!

till then...keep on traveling peeps!

Overland Trip Thailand: Andaman Sea Island Hopping 1.

Warghhhh.... I had to wake up early! And I still can't believe that I'm in THAILAND! My Island Hopping tour starts at 8 am and missing this will cost me 1050 Baht! LOL

So, the night before I managed to secure a package for Island Hopping at Boon Rub Travel and Tour, 101, Utarakit Road, Mueang Krabi, Krabi, 81000. Honestly, it was a great deal! Well, I think Patty and Jenny likes me! Because when I asked everyone else, they said they paid a different price. Lucky me!

The van picked me up with Taka-San and and Ikuei at Pak Up Hostel.  It seems that we are sharing boats with other travelers from other tour agencies. They code share their services. This is when I get to know how much other paid and some paid up to 2000 Baht for the exact same thing!

It was breathtaking view when we arrived at Ao Nang Beach, Krabi.  I kept pinching myself! Still can't believe it that I made it here ALONE! We all gathered there to be divided into boats and I found Malaysians on the same boat! Eira, Herman and Akim drove all the way from Kuala Kedah Port to Ao Nang, Krabi!

Okay, do ignore my face. That is a face forced to wake up early! haha.. But it was all worth it! The journey on Andaman Sea was simply amazing; I am rather speechless.

Though I almost threw up due to Sea Sickness, I manage to calm myself down and enjoy the trip. Self reminder: Don't sit at the front section of the boat unless you wanna have puke fiesta!  :P

The boat made its first stop at Railey Beach to pick up people from this small island for the same tour. I was already excited when I saw how clear the water was! It's so beautiful ; I have never seen anything like this in my life.

Our first destination was Koh Mai Pai or rather known as Bamboo Island.  The sea was a lil bit choppy the day I was there, so the waves were rough a lil. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the sun and water! Splendid experience!

Can you believe the water was so clear? And I was in the middle of the Andaman Sea! People told me it's called Emerald Crystal Clear water. And I have to agree. It did look Emerald much.

We spent about 1 hour here and we were off to other Islands.  It was truly great experience for me.

And the best part is that I did it SOLO! More stories about my backpacking coming up in next posts. Till then, keep on traveling peeps! :D

Cuti-Cuti 1 Malaysia Bicycle Ride Raub, Pahang Part 1.

So last weekend I was invited by Tourism Pahang to Raub, Pahang. The shuttles departed early in the morning from PWTC but I had to miss that as I have promised Digi. In which it turned out to be my lucky day! You can read it here.

Since I missed the bus, I had to take my own bus to Raub, Pahang. Honestly, I have never been to Raub, Pahang and have no idea how to get there. The only thing I know is that bus from KL- Raub can only be taken from Bas Station Jalan Pekeliling.

And there I was standing aimlessly. Kinda struck by the look of the bus station; I was expecting something more structured than literally "boxes" of ticket counters. Guess what, it turned out that every Saturday evening, bus ticket for Raub, Pahang route sells like "goreng pisang"!

Every single counter I went told me that they ran out of ticket to Raub. I have to either take the 2 hours 30 minutes bus or wait for 8pm bus! Mind you, I was there at 6pm. Tell you the truth, I almost gave up. But because I wanted to meet Dato' Sri Dr. Ng Yen Yen so badly, I gave in and waited.

While waiting, I took the chance to roam around and trying to get on the buses that were moving that time. Hoping that some of the passengers didn't turned up. I guess I was not the only one stuck there waiting; I met 2 lovely mothers with their 2 super cute children! I can't resist taking photos of them!

I had a really good talk with them about Raub and Pahang. Now I know that Raub is the city of Durian.  And Raub has a lot of rivers that they actually have to name them all and put signage all over Raub so that people would not be confused! Hearing the local people mentioning about Durian and rivers already done enough excitement to me!

After waiting for nearly 2 hours, I managed to secure a ticket on Mara Liner! Thanks to the lady who kept the ticket for me. I paid RM 9.60 for my ticket and off I was to Raub, Pahang!

In case you need to know, I took the 7pm bus heading to Sg. Koyan. It made a stop at Raub Old bus station. The journey took about 1 hour 3 minutes. I was lucky as I sat besides a local guy who happens to be studying Tourism at UNITEN! Cool!

We chit-chat throughout the journey about all things TRAVEL!  That must have been the best travel-ness bus ride ever! Thank you Tengku Zhafran for accompany me; Rayyan Haries the chatty traveler! haha...

When I arrived, the first thing the Tourism Pahang people took me to was to EAT!  The dinner was held at Rumah Rehat Raub. The spread was splendid! I had the chance to eat Ikan Patin Masak Asam! A local delicacy in Pahang! :D

Nothing was done at night as Raub is a pretty small and quiet town. I spent my night resting after a long long day from Kuala Lumpur to Raub, Pahang.

More updates in the next post!

Thank you Tourism Malaysia and Tourism Pahang! :D

21 Ways How I travel Cheap.

Everyone has been asking me " How the heck you spent RM 650 (approx USD 200) for 2 weeks of travel?".I am not rich and I don't have a shit loads of money in my piggy bank. I try to make use of my money to the max.

So, here is 21 Ways How I travel Cheap :

1. There is one time I stayed at 5 Star Hotel (Grand Magherita, Kuching) for 5 days for only RM 100 (approx USD 35). I used AirAsiaGo.com , most of the times they have LITERALLY crazy sale.'

2. For flight, I used to fly for 1 Cent! You can try Fleapy to secure cheap flight from AirAsia. Sometimes KLM flight to Indonesia is cheaper than AirAsia, you make the judgement.

3. I sleep most of the time in Hostel. Bunk bed and communal toilet. I love it! Check out HostelWorld and HostelBooker

4. Street food was my ultimate fuel. I spent no more than RM 10 (approx USD 3) per day.

5. I don't shop fancy. I mean, I only buy postcard and mail it home. Cheap and meaningful souvenirs.

6. I travel on the cheapest seat/coach on the train or bus.

7. I WALK most of the time.

8. I make use my student card to the fullest. You can save a lot.

9. Don't roam, buy the local simcard. Trust me, it's cheaper.

10. I make use of Free water, coffee, and breakfast at the hostel. This saves some of my money.

11. Wash your own cloths, it's cheaper and you get to gain some muscles.

12. I go to Big supermarket to get my supply (mineral water, snacks and etc). Way cheaper than 7-11.

13. Public bus in South East Asia is dirt cheap. Make full use.

14. Sometimes I buy the Tourist Pass (usually Unlimited rides of all public transport).

15. Most Hostel has free Internet/wi-fi nowadays, I save on that.

16. Always travel like local, that way not only you save but you get to know the country well.

17. Make your own tour, don't buy tour packages unless it's cheaper that way.

18. Check out places with free entrance, i.e museum, park and etc.

19. If you have the Asian look, camouflage as native, you pay shitload cheaper to enter attraction places.

20. Make friends, get attached and travel together. You can save on group activities.

21.Bring your towel and toiletries from home.

When you travel, it's not "what I can save the most" but what I can see the most of the country. What backpacking allows you to do is that you get to see the real life of the people in that country. You save and experience the most! So go travel, it's a lot cheaper and easier than you think.

17 reasons Why I backpack.

God knows how painful it was to be thrown out of the college after pursuing 3 years there. I did a mistake, failed a paper thus I was kick out. As much as I love traveling, I have to say that my failure has indeed played an important role. I left my country exactly the day I got the news.

So, why do I actually backpack for?

1. I want to see the world.

2. Challenged myself to be independent

3. I need a breather for my own life.

4. I was inspired by Fatt, Dr Sharul , Biqque and so many others.

5. Too many halal food in Malaysia. I wanted to feel the suffering finding one overseas.

6. People say you appreciate your life more once u travel. Just exactly what I wanted; to appreciate my life.

7. Too see crystal clear water in the sea. I have never seen any except when I swim in pool.

8. I want to have more friends. Foreigners that is.

9. Culture excites me.

10. Being a Muslim excites me to travel too. To see people's reaction when I tell them am Muslim.

11. My desire for foreign languages is too strong.

12. I NEED to make full use of my 40- 50kg Deuter bag. No dust collected.

13. Being in place that is unfamiliar makes me happy. Somehow...

14. I want to eat and eat and eat; just for the reason that I won't get these food in my country.

15. I have a dream to see all the Wonders of The World. I did visit one.

16. I wanted to ride all possible public transport, train, bus and etc overseas.

17. I want to find myself, again.

These are some of the reasons why I backpack. Some might just be generic, I bet many travelers or backpackers have the same reasons. It is the excitement being out, lost, hungy, tired while seeing something that is totally different. It was all worth while.

17. Have a debit card or credit card, it helps during emergency.

18. If it rains, just go out. Tell me, in what odd chance you can play in the rain in a foreign country?

19. Learn how to differentiate drinking water and mineral water. Well, you don't want to be ripped off aites?

20. Hearing stories and experiences from other backpackers/ travelers will toughen you. Physically and emotionally.

21. Getting lost in a foreign country is the best way to know the place well.

22. If you think there is people following you, just make a random stop at a nearby shop. They will usually walk away.

23. Vegetarian is not bad. Seriously.

Overland Trip Thailand: Sawadee krup Krabi!

After the grueling traveling overland all the way from the heart of Kuala Lumpur, am finally here in Krabi, Thailand! Woot2! Took me almost 20 hours ( 2 days) from a train ride from KL Sentral to Hat Yai, and bus ride from Hat Yai to Krabi. Jauh perjalanan membawa diri eh rayyan? haha :D

Yours truly, with heavy backpacks! =.="
So, I stayed at Pak Up Hostel, Utarakit Rd. It's situated in Krabi town, very quiet and peaceful town. It's not expensive. I paid 220 Baht per nite in air-condition room! Though no breakfast is included, you'll have easy access to food. Everything is just  walking distance.  Even makanan halal pon dekat. Riverside lagi! ;)

The room, I took the lower bunk and yeah the messiest one. haha
The common room with bean bags! me want one!
Honestly, this hostel is not bad. Boleh kata semua tip top and I seriously recommend to fellow backpackers and backpacker wannabe!

Yummy mini crispy pancake! rinduuuu..
So untuk dinner malam tu, I headed to the riverside to experience real thai food! And seriously one of the best I have ever had. And they serve halal food! Makanan kat krabi riverside ni tak mahal, between 5Baht to 60Baht.

Roti canai thai, no curry2 okay! haha...sweet nutella! Kelas ko jah, tepi jalan pakai nutella.
After dinner, misi mencari package Krabi Island hopping termurah ter-cheapskate pon bermula. Sebab memang peak season, farangs flocking Thailand, alkisahnya all packages became very very very lah expensive! T_T

Last2 dah pusing jumpa minah dua orang ni! Dah lah super friendly, Jenny and Patty gave me the best rate in Krabi. Island Hoping around Andaman Sea for me was only 1050 Baht! Wuhuuuuuuuuu.... bila sembang2 with other backpackers semua kena over 1200 Baht! erkk... some even paid up to 2000 Baht for the same trip. Homaigod kan?

Ni lah diorang siap suruh duk sana kerja ngan diorang coz I speak good english and malay!LOL
Malam tak buat apa2 sangat, boleh tak aku dpt super duper nightmare sampai jerit2 dalam dorm tu! =.=" hilang machooooo... habis semua orang terjaga. Everyone asked me if I'm okay and aku dengan segannya turun gi common hall..haha.

It was 3am and well bangun terus lapar beb! Gi 7-11 and ada makanan halal! Yeah!!! Lega gila boleh mamam ayam + pulut and instant noodle pagi2 tu..hehe

So nanti kita sambung lagi eh backpacking stories on the Overland Trip Thailand! Keep traveling peeps! :D

Overland Trip Thailand: Getting from Hat Yai to Krabi.

And am back! Sorry for the hiatus, been lazying around doing nothing.haha... Taklah, aku serious kemalasan melampau and busy attending ABAF ASIA, ngan adik aku accident lagi, and kakak aku accident kat Australia!Tu belum part aku sakit2..ish3.... Perghhh.... dugaan sungguh!

So back to backpacking!, today am gonna share with you how to get from Hat Yai to Krabi by Thailand local bus! Sangat2 adventurous! :D

For all kaki backpacking like me, route Hat Ya-Krabi ni is easy and safe. I survived to tell the tale. ;)

Akhbar and Zulia, newly wed couple on their way to Krabi! Ni lah the random people I travelled with.hehe
Oh dear God, see how Fat I was! looks like bloob of fatttt... T_T

The journey from Hat Yai Junction train station to Hat Yai Bus Station took about 20 minutes. And yeah, the tuk tuk or songtheaw does look like "lorry sayur" a bit. haha...thanks anon! ;)

We took something like this but without the cover.

Once we arrived, I went straight to the information counter. Remember, don't buy ticket from people/the touts, go to the counter and get your ticket ! ;)

Official government ticket counter. Plus these kakak2 are super friendly..hihi

The ticket from Hat Yai - Krabi was about 164 Baht, well cheaper than what I research for, it was 2nd class. Am not sure about the classes but I bet it's the duration of the travel. Sebab my time, they journey took almost 6 hours as the bus made a lot of stops.

Zaituna from Kazah, Julia and yours truly....

Time ni dah rasa macam Amazing Race lak...haha... Honestly I don't have any plan whatsoever when I landed myself in Thailand. Voila, there I was standing with strangers and having the chance to travel with them!

Zaituna from Kazakhstan is an AIESEC who was on her trip in SEA. Cikgu minah ni...hehe...special edu teacher! Salute2!

Ni lah Cha Yen pertama di bumi Thai ni... perghh...akak ni buat Cha Yen pakai mesin espresso beb!

See...terliur tak...slurpsss....

Ni lah the bus I took to krabi, bound for Phuket actually....
The condition in the bus, not bad...not bad for 164 Baht!
Dah lah aku tak suka naik bus long-haul ni, tido ngan buat tarapapa lah dalam bus. Chit-Chat ngan diorang ni pastu lentok habis. I think I woke when the made a stop at the rest area.

Lega giler bila tau stop ni ada makanan halal! Masakan Muslim area tuuu...pergh..memang aku melantak tak hinggat lah..haha... ye lah, my logic nanti susah nak dapat makanan halal dah.. hihi

The town we passed by along the journey.

You'll see a lot of this, people selling "holy flowers" to drivers on the highway.

Benda ni aku panggil lok lok, tah betul tah tak..haha... dah lah murah dari 5Baht to 15Baht yg paling mahal pon.

No worry, di sahkan halal on Jakim..hikhik...yo2 jer jakim tu rayyan oi..hihii

Route Hat Yai-Krabi ni easy peasy lah, I mean, not much harm done except that you have to avoid the touts at the train station. Other than that, I think you can do it! Gamateh ne!

When you arrive in Krabi, well not exactly Krabi lah, about 20 minutes away, make sure you take the Songtheaw/tuk tuk from the roadside, never ever ever take the one that is near to where your bus stop. They will charge you like crazy!

It's 20 Baht from bus station to Utarakit Rd, the Krabi town and 50- 60 Baht to Ao Nang, the beach side. Make sure you agree with the driver first before boarding.

Apa lagi eh, tunggu lah next entry boleh? haha... I stayed at Pak Up Hostel in Utarakit Rd, Krabi. Not bad lah...tunggguuu... haha

p/s: Sorry again for the long long hiatus.... ^^
